Everyone else, not quite, By Amir Khusrau "Catula" (Newark, DE United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: AMD FX-8150 FX 8-Core Black Edition Processor (FD8150FRGUBOX) (Electronics) This is going to be a rather long review; so I'll get the condensed version out of the way first. If you enjoy reading long reviews, well, you are in luck! Who should buy this CPU: * If you already have an AMD AM3+ capable motherboard and have a low end quadcore or an entry level Phenom II x6 (6 core) * You have to buy AMD because that's how you will always be (see my paragraph below) * You require serious number crunching ability for your heavy threaded applications * You love to overclock your CPU and the price of cooling equipment be damned! This is a Black Edition processor aka the CPU is built for overclocking and comes fully unlocked * You care about native DDR3-1866MHz support and Quad Channel DDR3 Why you would want to skip this one: * You have a decent Phenom II X4 or a Phenom II X6 processor * Your applications are single-threaded (Bulldozer lags behind Intel I5-2500k here)... Pros: AMD put a dump load of true Genuine Innovation within this brand new CPU design built from the ground up. I give AMD credit for taking a massive leap forward forcing themselves to innovate. Personally Bulldozer is a marvel of success, but it's for the future because today's software won't fully utilize the new architecture unless developers start releasing patch fixes. That said, for what you are paying for it's a super deal and a half, and makes for a great gaming CPU along with heavy multi-tasking use. Take my word for it, Bulldozer i.e.: AMD FX series is far from being a wash, it's innovation at it's best. Which is why I highly recommend them to everybody..... Cons: Currently it outperforms the Phenom II is most benchmarks but not all of them. I don't blame AMD for all of this; I blame the software developers along with Windows 7. The OS... The processor overclocks very well. If you have a good water cooler you can get as high as 5ghz on all 8 cores. 2. 8 cores means you will be able to multitask very well. 3. amd fx cpu's and motherboard combos can support 1866 ram speeds. 4. New design might help amd in the future, although I doubt that this chip will reap the benefits but its possible. cons 1. Clock to clock comparisons this amd fx chip is not as good as intel sandy bridge i7 and barely keeps up with sandy bride i5. 2. On many single core benchmarks this chip is lagging behind the competition and the older 1100t chip. 3. The chip seems to be overpriced because it does not perform better than the i5 sandy bridge it is competing with but it cost 40 dollars more than the Sandy bridge i5 2500k. other Benchmarks aside this thing works and it works well. I surf the web and I play video games. I don't have to worry about this chip bottle necking... Read more |
